BioBackground:
The third son of a prominent lord at the British Court, Laurence ran off to sea at an early age against his father's desires. He established himself well and rose quickly through the ranks to eventually take the position of Captain on a ship early in life. It was during his time as Captain that he ran across a ragged French frigate that was carrying a most extraordinary cargo: a dragon egg, meant for Napoleon himself as a gift from the Chinese Emperor. While it was originally decided by lot that another of his crew would attempt to harness the dragon when it was shown that the egg would hatch before they made port, the dragon attached himself to Laurence instead.
He named the queer little black dragon "Temeraire" after a French ship that had been taken by the British Navy and the two were thick as thieves almost immediately, even though the relationship would mean a loss in status and prospects, as well as a transfer out of the Navy. When they got back to land, just such happened and Laurence was transfered to the Aerial Corps to become an aviator captain of the dragon Temeraire.
Temeraire is a rare breed of dragon, Chinese in origin; the Chinese breed for intelligence and personality as opposed to fighting power or any of the spitting abilities, but they are regarded as the most skilled breeders of dragons in all the world. Temeraire himself is a Celestial, the pinnacle of their breeding, and as such has the singular talent of Celestial Dragons called the divine wind: a sonic blast of sound that can cause incredible amounts of damage. ==>spoilers in white text
Personality:
Laurence is friendly and pleasant and polite, a good man in all manners of the word with a deep sense of honor and responsibility. He's rather liberal, having been brought up in an abolitionist home, and he tries at all times to be decent and considerate of others. He's excellent at necessary civility but not the best at political maneuvering as he will not bend on the most important of principles. He will not order a man to do something he will not do himself and he tends to risk himself in that regard past even as far as his men would prefer. He puts duty before everything and his absolute greatest duty is to Temeraire himself as he loves the dragon like nothing else.
Temeraire is incredibly intelligent, highly philosophical, somewhat revolutionary, and he loves learning. Books are some of his favorite things, books and jewels and Laurence. He tends to like spicy foods, though he'll eat a plain animal as easily as anything else. Unlike many other dragons, he enjoys swimming as well as flying and as a young male dragon, he also enjoys fighting. He knows French, English, and Chinese with great fluency.
Captain William Laurence and his dragon, Temeraire, are entirely and completely the brilliant property of Noami Novik as they are found in her Temraire books, including His Majesty's Dragon, Throne of Jade, and Black Powder War. This journal, as such, is purely for entertainment (specifically in the realm of role-playing) purposes, with no copyright infringment intended, nor any profit either. The creator of this journal can only hope that she will do justice to Miss Novik's creations, of which she is a great fan.
